UV radiation, produced by a mercury vapor lamp, penetrates the cell wall of the microorganism, destroying their genetic stability, and consequently, their reproductive capacity, and thus makes their ability to cause infections.

The efficiency of a system of UV disinfection depends on the characteristics of the water to treat, the intensity of UV radiation, the contact time of microorganisms with UV radiation, and so on. The efficiency of disinfection is about 99.99%.
